For handbag lovers across Seminole County, the search for a bargain may be your next reason to give back to charity - and perhaps an excuse to have a little fun while you're at it.
Saturday, the SizzorS Salon in Oviedo will host what organizers hope to be the first of many Handbag Happy Hours. Beginning at 5 p.m.View profiles and information for the Team RadioShack Cycling 2012 race team and riders here.If you love okwatch88,Please buy it!, the local salon will transform its airy interior into a swanky handbag shop, where guests can engage in silent auctions for both brand new and gently used designer handbags.
Handbags will be set up on various tables, separated by brand and available for silent auction. Auctions will end at various times, but cocktails, hors d' oeuvres and live entertainment will continue throughout the evening. From Birkin, Guess and Christian Dior, to Kathy Van Zeeland, the night will make for an all-star cast of hand bags.
Local musician Tod Kimbro will provide the live entertainment, and guests will be surrounded by art that fills the walls of the local salon. Admission is free to those who donated a handbag, $5 if purchased in advance or $10 at the door. Starting bids will vary,Welcome to Specialized Cycling jersey online! but Nancy Marion, owner of SizzorS Salon, said she prefers to keep them low in hopes of a bidding war.
"There are some Dooney & Bourkes in there that still have price tags on, and there's some Coach bags in there that don't have price tags on them, but I'd like them," she said, with a laugh. "[Starting bids] won't be too high because I want a bidding war to happen, but it won't be too low because I need to collect money for this worthwhile charity."
And that worthwhile charity is the reason behind the main event, she said. The goal of the evening is to raise funds for Helpful Hands, a local organization that Marion said she just couldn't resist supporting. The goal is to raise $1,000, she said, so that the charitable organization can continue giving back to struggling families in the local community.
Regina Bereswill, founder of Helpful Hands, said the event will aid her organization's efforts to fill in where other organization's leave off. The goal, she said, is to provide families with "quality of life" donations, such as paying for a child's sport involvement or providing high school seniors with prom dresses, tuxedos or class rings.
"We do not provide the basics. No food, clothing or shelter. We work with agencies who do that. We provide those areas of a child's life or a family, because we think of providing for the children as truly providing for the family, the life skills," Bereswill said.
Helpful Hands partners with organizations like Hope Helps Inc. and Boys Town as a means to fill in the gaps of giving. Bereswill said the organization emphasizes programs like fine arts and extracurricular activities because those are what keep at-risk youth focused and determined to have a prosperous future.
"We work with the agency that provides the food,Great discounts on our huge range of SAXO BANK Cycling clothing . and we think that fine art is the food that feeds the soul," she said. "Because, we believe, one, it prevents a child or a young teen from becoming at risk,Welcome to SKY Cycling online, we supply most popular and valuable wholesale products. because currently they're not, but by any particular means they should be. It provides [a child] with stability. It gives her determination, dedication, all those life skills that make a good citizen."
The group also supports milestone celebrations for children with cancer, such as hair re-growth celebrations and birthday parties.
Bereswill said Helpful Hands began after her own struggle. Diagnosed with breast cancer, she beat the odds and felt inspired to give back. The organization was formed by 20 members from the East Seminole area and with it blossomed a new kind of way to give back. The group raises money throughout the year through two main fundraisers - an annual golf tournament and a gala titled "Evening Under the Stars," which is still in the works this year but will be planned toward the end of September.
But beyond the group's own efforts, it relies on help from the community, much like what Marion is doing through the Handbag Happy Hour.
