TWO thieves rifled through the handbags of unsuspecting women and stole debit and credit cards in a busy pub restaurant.

The female culprits targeted a group of women eating lunch at the 20 at the Kings Arms Hotel in the afternoon on Thursday, May 9 and stole the bank cards before going into a branch of Santander and withdrawing around $2,500 in cash in two transactions at two different branches.

Now Daphne Helyer, one of the victims, wants to warn others to be wary of opportunist thieves and guard their bags closely.

The 63-year-old had the money returned to her account by the bank after reporting her card stolen, but was concerned at how easy it was for the fraudsters to withdraw the money.

These two ladies behind us were making a lot of noise and attracting a lot of attention, even speaking to the manageress.

“One of them dropped a scarf and that must have been when they reached in and took the cards out my purse. It was very quick and none of us noticed so they must have planned it.

“It was very blatant and I don’t think they would have known there was CCTV at the Kings, who reported it to the police.

“Within a few hours $2,500 had gone from my account. I only noticed when I went to put a card my husband had borrowed back in my purse, otherwise I might not have seen it was missing and they could have taken a lot more.

“I said to the bank how was it possible they went to two different branches and took that much money out?

“Santander put the money back in the next day and apologised for their security, but I suppose all they had to do was sign for it and they could’ve easily forged my signature as no one looks too closelyy.

“I think people should be aware and not leave their handbags or purses where people can get at them.”

A Santander spokeman said: “It is important to look after your cards and keep your PIN safe. Make sure you don’t give your PIN to anyone,Welcome to buy christian louboutin shoes from our online store. and don’t write it down.

“It’s wise to avoid using a PIN that could be obvious, like your birthday, for example. As soon as you notice a card has been lost or stolen, make sure you let your bank know straight away.”

The management at the Kings are helping police with CCTV footage of the pair.
