Expensive for local teams

The Texas Ballhawks packed players into two vans and a Suburban last summer to get to a tournament in Las Vegas. AAU season, which typically runs from April to the end of July, costs the Ballhawks between $50,000 and $70,000 for its four teams.

Car washes, donations from businesses and hamburger sales help with some of the costs. The coaches also require each kid to pay $500 per season. That generates about $5,000 per team and $20,000 for the program. But coaches end up paying much of the expenses on the road, from food to gas. Dill said he had to stop paying attention to how much money he puts into the team. Dill, a processor operator at Lucite International, is one of six coaches who volunteers his time with the team.

"It's very hard to get donations here," Dill said. "We do whatever we can to keep it going."

Dill doesn't mind the lack of a shoe company sponsorship, though, because it takes pressure off the need to win and places it on trying to get scholarships for players. Teams with shoe sponsorships have to win at a particular pace or their contract won't be renewed.

"With the Ballhawks, I'm able to develop players and give players who wouldn't normally make a team an avenue to play and get better," Dill said.

For Dill, setting up a tournament schedule, which determines cost, starts with contacting assistant coaches of college basketball programs. Those assistant coaches watch some of the Ballhawks' players at practice and smaller, local tournaments and then tell Dill which national tournaments their head coaches will attend. He tries to get his teams to four or five of those tournaments.
