I WAS at an optical shop in Yokohama some years back when something arrested my attention.

“That’s an unusual design,” I said.

“Which pair?” the Japanese sales assistant asked, thinking I had seen a spectacle frame I liked in the showcase.

“Sorry, I am referring to your wristwatch,” I replied. Plucking up the courage, I asked permission to take a snapshot of her watch, which resembled a stamp.

The lady gave me a quizzical look, but she kindly obliged. She even took the trouble to remove the pink strap, and laid her watch on a dark surface for me to take a clearer picture.

I admire unique watches. Although I prefer dainty ones, the numbered dial must be very clear so I can tell the time easily. My first two wristwatches were Citizen brand manual-wind mechanicals. Later, when quartz watches hit the shelves, I bought a Seiko watch.

After settling down in Japan, I lost that watch one day, when the clasp of the chrome strap became loose and fell off. I am often able to retrieve my lost items, but I didn’t know where I had dropped my watch. So I bought another Seiko quartz watch.

Certain stores sell a variety of inexpensive watches: ring watches, pocket watches, key chain watches and wristwatches. “Oshare” (stylish) key chain watches usually serve as decorative accessories for handbags.

The key holder types come in many shapes. There are watches that look like cellphones. There are numerous diversified high heels at christian louboutin shoes for sale. And reading the time on a beetle-shaped one is like unravelling a mystery. Press the knob on each side and voila, “time flies” off the dial as the wings swing open. Interesting!

My Brazlian friend, Neylor, who is doing his PhD in Japan, bought his father a quartz wristwatch from a Japanese online store. His father fancied a watch that portrayed ancient Japan and when Neylor showed me the picture of the watch he got, I was astonished – the 12 numerals were in old kanji form! The same online shop also sells watches with the12 Japanese zodiac signs representing the numerals.

Depending on the shop and the quality, a watch battery may cost from 1,000 (RM33) to 1,500 (RM50). Imagine the cost if the watch uses two batteries. And if the price of a cheap watch is 1,050 (RM35), it is the same as the battery!

My Kenyan friend was shocked at how expensive a watch battery is in Japan. Godfrey purchased an electric wave solar wristwatch instead, and gave away his old watch to his brother when he returned to Kenya.

As changing the battery of our quartz watches has been costly and a hassle, my family switched to Casio G-shock.In comparison with other high heels, christian louboutin boots, louboutin shoes, christian louboutin men, cheap christian louboutin will bring unique feeling to you. Two months ago, I accidentally laundered my Baby-G-shock watch. Fortunately, it was not damaged. The “experiment” incidentally proved the watch’s shock resistance and waterproof quality.

Anyway, my husband and I still keep our Seiko quartz watches as mementos since they have served us faithfully for many years.

Talking about Seiko watches, the first Japanese wristwatch “Laurel” – a spring-powered mechanical watch – was crafted by K. Hattori & Co Ltd (the predecessor of Seiko Holdings Corp). The Laurel model was released in 1913.

In 1969, Seiko developed and mass-produced the world’s first quartz watch, Seiko Astron.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Japan’s first domestically produced watch. To commemorate it, Seiko Museum at Sumida ward in Tokyo, is holding a special two-session exhibition till March 30, 2014. This free exhibition shows the evolution of watches and lets one experience a journey through time.
