Hizaamak Amaanak, (Buckle up for Life), the latest film campaign to promote safety on Oman's roads, produced by Sustainability, an Omani NGO, won first prize for the best road-safety communications film, Middle East and Asia, at the Global Road-Safety Film Festival in Paris held recently.
Filmmakers from more than 30 countries participated in this prestigious event, which was held under the patronage of the United Nations Road-Safety Collaboration, with the support of the FIA Foundation, to promote the second UN Decade of Action for Road-Safety Week on May 6-12.
The Decade of Action was launched in May 2011, with the objective of saving 5 million lives across the world by 2020. The film festival highlighted key themes of the global plan for road safety: speeding, seatbelts and child-safety seats, driving under the influence, wearing a helmet, pedestrian safety, and road infrastructure.
The film Hizaamak Amaanak is the focal point of Sustainability's new campaign to promote the use of seatbelts, with the goal of reducing the spiralling rates of death and injury among young people involved in road accidents in Oman.
A short mini-drama, the film portrays a family struggling behind closed doors to come to terms with the everyday reality of living with a car-crash victim who has sustained brain and spinal-cord injuries. It targets young drivers and their parents with the message that a seatbelt can spell the difference between life and death or a devastating life-long injury, even in the case of a low-speed crash, and can prevent up to 50 per cent of fatalities or injuries.
The story scenario was filmed in Arabic and has English subtitles.
Launched in October, the film, which was produced with the support of Sohar Aluminium LLC — a recognised leader in corporate social responsibility initiatives with a special focus on road safety — has been screened in workshops and presentations for the Omani community and can be watched online on the Salim and Salimah, Safe and Sound website or YouTube channel.
