The future is now. This is what 3D printing has been moving towards: printing a practical, zero-assembly item in the background while you live your life, like a Star Trek replicator in slow motion.

Four pairs of wedge shoes created by Finnish designer Janne Kyttanen of 3D Systems have been made available as free downloads on the website of 3D Systems' printing company Cubify.

Although the shoes were designed to be printed on the CubeX 3D printer, they should be fine to print on any printer with the same size printing area or larger — 275x265x240 millimetres — and each single shoe takes about six or seven hours to print. Each pair is available in US sizes 35 to 40.

The basic design is a plain pair of peep-toe wedges with three variations: Macedonia, Leaf and Facet. They are printable in whatever colour printing material you can get your hands on. Macedonia has a flat strap with the wedge dotted with holes; Leaf is covered with a grooved pattern; and Facet looks like it has been carved from polygons.

"I don't know what it is with women and shoes, but I like it," Kyttanen said in a press release. "I would like it even better if my girlfriend could wear a different pair every single day. Today, this is a reality. Women can print this first collection of shoes overnight and wake up every morning to a new pair."

The aim of the collection is to attract new users to 3D printing. While the technology has been used to create jewellery and haute couture, so far, women have not seen the possibilities at home, 3D Systems believes.
