Organizers reported 50 coats and three blankets were collected recently to fulfill an area need. 

Dr. Gary Stewart,2012 Garmin Cycling Components. of Resurgens Orthopaedics, and Orthopaedic South Surgical Center recently teamed up for their fourth annual coat and blanket drive, benefiting Haven House Inc. 

“It helps us a lot,” said Marjorie Lacy, the executive director of Haven House. 

The nonprofit organization provides a safe haven for battered women and their children.

They flee their homes generally, so they don’t really bring much.” 

Lacy said the shelter has provided refuge to roughly 600 women and children already this year. She said the shelter likely will serve another 150 women and children over the course of the winter. 

Stewart, who practices at the Resurgens offices in McDonough and Morrow, said he is pleased with the charity drive. 

“This time of year many people want to do something kind for others but aren’t sure how,” Stewart said. “The coat drive is a great opportunity for people to help out.” 

Haven House was founded 12 years ago to provide food, shelter, transportation, medical needs and relocation resources to the women and their children. But the needs go beyond food and shelter. 

Lacy said a lesser known need that remains consistent is new underwear and socks for the women and children the organization serves. 

The nonprofit accepts canned foods, clothing, supplies and furniture at Blessings Thrift Store, 86 Workcamp Road in McDonough. “Ultimate teams share with each other. Ultimate athletes recognize their gifts and share outside their ego that makes them great. You need a strong ego to be a great player. But it can’t be all about you. That’s the paradox of team sports. 

“Each time a basketball player makes a good pass on the court, you are executing a service project for your teammates.” 

His players now realize there can be more to the holidays than Frosty, Rudolph and Jingle Bells. 

“This helps us realize how lucky we are,” Rogowski said. “It makes me thankful for my family and how blessed I am. It shows the significance of sharing and how grateful people are.” 

And what might Santa be bringing for good, little student-athletes like Megan and Chanise? 

“I asked for black boots---mid-calf---and a new wallet,” Rogowski said with a laugh. “And one other thing---a Keurig Coffee Brewer. That would be great to have in my room.”
