Once his time was up at the Mission, staff allowed him to stay an extra week since it was so close to Christmas.

Turns out, the Rescue Mission was having an opening for a cook. They offered the job to Safford, who immediately accepted. The job was a blessing not only financially, but also spiritually, as well.

“That gave me not only the opportunity to have a servant’s heart, it also gave me so much extra time to read my Bible and to really get the word down in me before going out into the world,” he said. Safford remained at the mission as the cook for three months. While there, he started coming across multiple passages in the Bible about “going out into the wilderness.” After a while, he started to suspect that it was instruction from God to transfer to the Rescue Mission’s Step Up Farm where men live and work while they get their lives back in tune with God.

He talked with director Larry Self and became a resident of the farm, where he stayed for two months, working, growing closer to God, and saving up money to buy a home of his own.
